Ex-NFL head coach Lovie Smith's son Mikal, 43, is arrested on prostitution-related charges

The son of former NFL head coach Lovie Smith has been arrested in Arizona on sex trafficking charges.

Mikal Smith, 43, was booked in Tempe, Arizona on Thursday for pandering, receiving the earnings of a prostitute, money laundering, conspiracy, and illegal control of enterprise, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

Lovie Smith, 62, is currently the head coach for the University of Illinois.

Mikal Smith is being held on $100,000 bail at Gilbert Chandler Jail, according to NBC's affiliate in Phoenix, 12News.com. He is scheduled to be arraigned on September 10. 

Other details about the case remain unclear, such as the circumstances of Smith's arrest.

Mikal Smith is, himself, a former NFL assistant head coach, working under his father Lovie with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Lovie Smith was a linebacker at Tulsa in the late 1970s before becoming a defensive coach at a number of big colleges, including Tennessee and Ohio State.

After a stint as the Buccaneers linebackers coach, Lovie Smith was named the St. Louis Rams defensive coordinator in 2001.

From 2004 until 2012 he served as the head coach of the Bears, winning AP Coach of the Year in 2005. The following season Smith guided Chicago to the Super Bowl, where the Bears lost to the Indianapolis Colts.

Lovie Smith served as the Bucs head coach in 2014 and 2015, and has been the Fighting Illini's head coach since 2016.
