The first - and most popular - is pearl, which has long been cherished as a staple accessory because it adds an element of class to any outfit. It's also been the go-to gem stone of choice for the upper echelons of society for generations.
Pearls are pretty special because they're the only gemstones made by living creatures (mollusks) which deposit layers of calcium carbonate around microscopic irritants like a grain of sand, which gets lodged in their shells and forms the pearl. Rather fittingly, the name ‘pearl’ originates from Old French perle, from the Latin perna, which means ‘leg’, and nods to the leg-of-mutton shape of an open mollusk shell.
Obviously natural pearls made in the wild are the most precious, in-demand and valuable but millions of cultured pearls are raised in pearl farms, where humans grow and harvest them in saltwater or freshwater. You'll find a lot of freshwater cultured pearls in China, the northwestern coastline of Australia, the Philippines, and Indonesia but sadly, due to too much pearl fishing over the years, natural pearls are few and far between and it's cultured pearls that account for most of the sales today.
The second June birthstone is moonstone, which has a gorgeous milky hue and, according to Hindu mythology, is made of solidified moonbeams.
It was given its moniker by the Roman natural historian Pliny, who was convinced that the gem stone's shimmery appearance shifted with the phases of the moon.
Although the milky-hued birthstones are more common, moonstone also comes in yellow, green, blue, peach, and pink. You can spot a rare and valuable moonstone because of its colourlessly transparent shade offset with a blue shimmer; they are mostly found in Sri Lanka.
The third and final June birthstone is alexandrite, which is quite modern and was discovered in Russian emerald mines in 1834. Apparently the first alexandrite was found on the same day that future Russian Czar Alexander II came of age so it was then named after him.
Whilst alexandrite doesn't feature hugely in today's jewellery, it has long captivated people because of how it changes colour throughout the day thanks to its traces of chromium, which is also found in emerald. You'll find that alexandrite is a greeny hue in the day but more red in the evening. Due to alexandrite's uncommon chemical composition, it has become of the rarest and most expensive gemstones ever, which is pretty major for June babies.

The reason? To allow more affordable options in addition to the traditional, more expensive stones. Along with August and December, June is one of the few months that is blessed with three birthstones.
What does alexandrite symbolise?Alexandrite is thought to bring its wearers good luck, prosperity, and intellect. It is also ideal for anyone seeking balance in their life because its changing colours symbolise the balance of physical and spiritual.
What does pearl symbolise?Ever since Ancient Times, pearls have been prized as teardrops fallen from heaven and are still considered a symbol of purity today.
Pearls, which were traditionally given as a wedding gift, have long been thought to bestow long life and prosperity. They also have health benefits and were used to alleviate indigestion, haemorrhages, eye problems and depression.
Because the pearl connects so deeply with the third eye chakra - the gateway to our inner well of knowledge - pearls are thought to be ideal for people seeking clarity and strength in tough times.
What does moonstone symbolise?Moonstone is linked to all things romance, including passion, fertility and love. It generally serves to awaken feminine energy.
