Stuart Kleinman, Producer and Attorney, Dies at 57

Stuart Kleinman, who served as VP at ICM and headed Jodie Foster‘s Egg Pictures, died April 22 in New York of a heart attack. He was 57.

Kleinman was an enthusiastic film lover who attended NYU film school in the late 1970s during the time Jim Jarmusch, Barry Sonnenfeld and Spike Lee were getting their start.  Moving to Los Angeles, he started working on album covers for acts including the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor. He then graduated from Yale Law School, and went to work with Arthur Klein at Frankfurt, Garbus, Klein & Selz, where he was involved in dealmaking with creatives including Al Pacino and Todd Solondz.

In 1990, Kleinman went to work for Jeff Berg as a VP at ICM, and in 1992 became president of Jodie Foster’s Egg Pictures. He was credited as producer of “Waking the Dead” and exec producer of “Home for the Holidays.” He returned to New York as a partner at Frankfurt, Kurnit, Klein & Selz, and in 2004 left to concentrate on writing and producing.

Kleinman was known for helping up-and-coming filmmakers including Mathieu Kassovitz, for whom he helped find distribution for “La Haine,” and Shunji Iwai.

He is survived by a brother, a niece and a nephew.
